Still in my search for palatable military SF, I figured I'd give 40K a second try with a series recommended by Chris Morgan. Of the Warhammer 40k novels, the Space Marine Battles seem to be a little lower on the “literature” scale than, say, the Horus Heresy stuff. Books in Brief : Horus Rising by Dan Abnett Having been following the tales of the Heresy since it's first inclusion into 40K; what was once a simple tale of betrayal is shaping up to be a tragedy of epic proportions. And I am perfectly okay with that. I've previously read a 40k novel. Although the series really didn't start taking off until ebooks were made available in late 2010. That novel was pretty disappointing. Lord of the Night and Bane of Kings review the epic Horus Heresy series, starting at the very beginning with Horus Rising by Dan Abnett. Did you know the first Horus Heresy book was released in 2006? For my latest review, Beasts of War set me the task of finding out what would be the best book to act as an introduction for someone new to the background of the 40k universe. But none of it, really, is high-class stuff. Anthologies are hardback, unsigned 128 pages long, with a lower production value and all contain six short stories from Warhammer and 40k almost always including a Horus Heresy and a Time of Legends short story. Black Library has announced the upcoming publication of Macragge's Honor, the first title in a new series of graphic novels based on the Horus Heresy story line from the Warhammer 40K range of games. Enter Horus Rising, first book in the successful Horus Heresy series, and written by one of the giants of the Black Library, Dan Abnett, who also wrote the Gaunt's Ghosts series and the screenplay for the recent Ultramarines movie. This was put out just over one year after Horus rising was released, but by this time there were already five Horus Heresy novels published! The Chapbooks are always softback and without a spine, . Both short stories from the Horus Heresy Series.
